Philippe-Jean Bunau-Varilla

Born 26 Jul 1859; died 18 May 1940 at age 80.French engineer who was an early advocate of the building of a canal across the Isthmus of Panama and chief organizer of the project. He was instrumental in getting the waterway routed through Panama instead of Nicaragua. He was a leader in the conspiracy that successfully wrested Panama from Colombia.
