First skyscraperIn 1884, construction began in Chicago, Illinois, on the first skyscraper, the ten-story steel-skeleton Home Insurance Company of New York (The use of a steel skeleton made the building of skyscrapers possible, for the frame carries the entire weight of the building, instead of the walls themselves supporting the entire weight.) Designed by Major William Le Baron Jenney, marble was used on the walls of the building, with four columns of polished granite supporting a a marble balcony. Work was finished in the fall of 1885. Later, two more stories were added. |
