ColumbiumIn 1801, Charles Hatchett announced to the Royal Society in London that he had discovered a new element, which he named columbium (Cb). In 1801, while working for the British Museum in London he analyzed a piece of columbite, a black mineral from New England, found by JohnWinthrop (1606-1676), the first governor of Connecticut, a mineral collector. His grandson sent the specimen decades before to Sir Hans Sloane, who gave it to the museum. Columbite turned out to be a very complex mineral but Hachett discovered that it contained a “new earth”which implied the existence of a new element which he could detect, but not isolate. Rediscovered 40 years by German chemist, Heinrich Rose, it is now called niobium.« |
