There were two guys working for the city. One would dig a hole -- he would dig, dig, dig.
The other would come behind him and fill the hole -- fill, fill, fill. These two men worked furiously; one digging a hole, the other filling it up again.
A man was watching from the sidewalk and couldn't believe how hard these men were working, but couldn't understand what they were doing. Finally he had to ask them.
He said to the hole digger, "I appreciate how hard you work, but what are you doing? You dig a hole and your partner comes behind you and fills it up again!"
The hole digger replied, "Oh yeah, must look funny, but the guy who plants the trees is sick today."

Stanley Cohen

Born 17 Nov 1922.American biochemist who shared (with Rita Levi-Montalcini) the 1986 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for “for their discoveries of growth factors.” His researchwas on epidermal growth factor (EGF), a protein produced in the body that is involved in normal cell growth, differentiation, wound healing, and other developmental events in the body. For example, he found that in new-born mice, it would cause earlier teething and opening of the eyes. EGF and NGF (the nerve growth factor studied by Levi-Montalcini) were the first of a number of growth-regulating signal substances now known. Their discovery led to greater understanding of the results of many diseases, such as developmental malformations, degenerative changes in senile dementia, delayed wound healing and tumours.«
