After a few minutes she went up to the sentry and asked 'I've always wanted to find out what's worn under the kilt'.

He made an early, though unsuccessful attempt to decipher hieroglyphics of the Coptic language. During the pursuit of experimental knowledge, he once had himself lowered into the crater of Vesuvius to observe its features soon after an eruption. He made one of the first natural history collections.
