Birth control clinic

In 1916, the first birth control clinic in the U.S. was opened - by Margaret Sanger, her sister, Ethel Byrne, both nurses, and an associate, Fania Mindell - at 46 Amboy Street, near the corner of Pitkin Avenue, in Brooklyn, NYC, was in the impoverished area of Brownsville. A circular announcing its opening was printed in English, Yiddish and Italian. The clinic was closed by the police, and she received a 30-day jail sentence. Sanger also helped organize (1917) the National Birth Control League which would later become the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. She opened a permanent birth control clinic in New York City in 1923.
