Died 14 Feb 1845 at age 82 (born 14 Jul 1762).French educator who reformed the French educational system during the French Revolution. He was a respected scientist of the time, and observed the development of the telegraph by Ignace Chappe. On 25 Feb 1795, Joseph Lakanal defined on behalf of the French Revolution an “educational utopia”which would “put an end to inequalities of development that affected a citizen's capacities for judgment.”
