In 1656, modern-day imitation pearls were first manufactured by the Frenchman Jacquin, a rosary-bead maker. He coated the inside surface of a hollow glass bead with a mixture made of fish scales, made centuries ago by groups as diverse as ancient Egyptians and native Americans.
