Goddard Space Flight Center dedication

In 1961, the Goddard Space Flight Center was formally dedicated. This was NASA's first research center, and it was named in memory of Robert Goddard, the rocketry pioneer. The $27 million facility was still being built, but enough work had been completed to justify holding the ceremony.
