Francisco SanchesDied c. 26 Nov 1623 (born c. 1550).Portuguese physician and philosopher who espoused a "constructive skepticism" that rejected mathematical truths as unreal and Aristotle's theory of knowledge as false. In Quod nihil scitur, written in 1576, explored the human epistemological situation and showed that man's knowledge claims in all areas were extremely dubious. Sanches advocated recognizing that nothing can be known and then trying to gain what limited information one can through empirical scientific means. |
