Sierra ClubIn 1892, the Sierra Club was organized in a meeting at Warren Olney's office in San Francisco. The Sierra Club was incorporated “to explore, enjoy, and render accessible the mountain regions of the Pacific Coast; to publish authentic information concerning them,”and “to enlist the support and cooperation of the people and government in preserving the forests and other natural features of the Sierra Nevada.” John Muir was elected president. The 182 men and women charter members shared a passion for wild places. In its first conservation effort, the Sierra Club led a campaign to defeat a proposed reduction in the boundaries of Yosemite National Park. The Sierra Club helped translate concern into concrete, effective action. |
