Nicolaas Bloembergen

Born 11 Mar 1920. Dutch-American physicist who shared (with Arthur L. Schawlow of the United States and Kai M. Siegbahn of Sweden) the 1981 Nobel Prize for Physics for their revolutionary spectroscopic studies of the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with matter. Bloembergen made a pioneering use of lasers in these investigations and developed three-level pumps used in both masers and lasers.
