German rocket programIn 1932, the year he received his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Wernher von Braun was named head of the German liquid-fuel rocket program. He signed a contract with the Reichswehr to conduct research leading to the development of rockets as military weapons. By 1934, he was building rockets along with artillery captain Walter Dornberger and a team of 80 engineers. In Dec 1934, he had his first successes with an A2 rocket powered by ethanol and liquid oxygen. When the research team outgrew their facility outside Berlin, a larger one was built at Peenemunde, a remote island off the Baltic coast.« |
