In 1808, Humphry Davy announced in a paper read to the Royal Scociety that he had separated the element boron. Davy had taken boric acid with potassium in a copper tube and heated it to dull redness for fifteen minutes. The resulting olive-gray powder did not effervesce with water or acids, indicating that the potassium had disappeared.
