Born 2 Dec 1921.(née Lugoski) American chemist who notable achievements include the development of her "Symbolic Addition Procedure", which has become the method of choice for structure determination from X-ray diffraction data on crystalline materials, even in computerized programs. It dramatically increased the speed and accuracy of chemical and biomedical analysis. Her work has had a significant impact on the fields of molecular biology, chemistry, physics, metallurgy, geology, genetics, and pharmacology, contributing to the discoveries of new drugs to combat many diseases. In 1969 she determined the crystal structure of toxins found in the venom of frogs in South America, which are used in the study of nerve transmission.
