Bessemer patentIn 1855, English inventor, Henry Bessemer took out a British patent for his "decarbonization process, utilizing a blast of air" that revolutionised steel manufacturing (No. 66/1855). Scientific American (14 Dec 1872) said this patent was "one of the most lucrative" recorded. On 11 Nov 1856, Bessemer was issued US Patent No. 16,082 for his steel-making process. However, shortly thereafter a dispute gave priority to the American William Kelly, who though filing after Bessemer, was recognized as the first to actually use a blast of air into molten pig iron to make steel.
