John Harrison Died 24 Mar 1776 at age 83 (born 24 Mar 1693).English horologist who invented the first practical marine chronometer, which enabled navigators to compute accurately their longitude at sea. He was prompted to begin this work after a huge reward was offered by the British government for new navigational tools to avoid further disasters at sea.
