The Monastery on a Cliff

There is a story about a monastery perched high on a cliff several hundred feet in the air. The only way to reach the monastery was to be suspended in a basket which was pulled to the top by several monks who pulled and tugged with all their strength. Obviously the ride up the steep cliff in that basket was terrifying. One tourist got exceedingly nervous about half-way up as he noticed that the rope by which he was suspended was old and frayed. With trembling voice, he asked the monk who was riding with him in the basket how often they changed the rope.
The monk thought for a moment and answered brusquely, "Whenever it breaks."

Mont Blanc Road Tunnel

In 1965, the Mont Blanc seven-mile road tunnel opened, linking the countries of France and Italy. 11.6 km long, the Mont-Blanc tunnel links Courmayeur and the Italian Val d'Aoste with the French valley of Chamonix Mont-Blanc. It takes a little more than 10 minutes to go through the tunnel and 1/2 an hour overall to get from Courmayeur to the centre of Chamonix. The Mont-Blanc tunnel holds the world record for the deepest tunnel with 2480 m of rock covering it. It took six years, from 1959 to 1965, to bore the 11.6-km long tunnel.
