His talents were prodigous, spanning medicine, biology, physiology, mechanics, physics, astronomy, and oceanography. His principal work, Hydrodynamica (1734, publ. 1738) on fluid dynamics provides formulas for velocity, duration and quantity of fluid flow out of the opening of a container. Bernoulli's famous theorem, based on the conservation of energy, states the total mechanical energy of the flowing fluid remains constant.
