James HuttonDied 26 Mar 1797 at age 70 (born 3 Jun 1726). Scottish geologist who initiated the principle of uniformitarianism with his Theory of the Earth (1785). He asserted that geological processes examined in the present time explain the formation of older rocks. John Playfair effectively championed Hutton's theory.
