The ends were closed with fluorspar screw caps covered with a layer of gum lac. Electrolysis produced a gas at the anode. When Moissan tested it with silicon, it immediately burst into flame, which he regarded as a test for fluorine gas. Two days later, his discovery was announced at the Academy of Science, Paris.* |
