First U.S. railroad suspension bridge

In 1855, the first U.S. suspension bridge was crossed by its first train. Started in 1853, and completed in 1854, the suspension bridge spanned the gorge at Niagara Falls, New York. The bridge construction was started by Charless Ellet, and taken over by John Augustus Roebling, who finished it.
